In His Own Words: A Transgender Patient Journey

Throughout the course of my work in plastic surgery, I have met so many wonderful patients from all over the Capital Region and beyond, and some of them have incredible transformations and wonderful stories that simply must be told. For example, when Thomas came to The Plastic Surgery Group looking to undergo Top surgery, I was excited for the opportunity to help complete his physical journey — so he could finally feel like his true self.

Recently, I sat down with him to talk about his experience working with my team. Here’s what he had to say:

Dr. Rockmore: How did you come to find The Plastic Surgery Group?

Thomas: My endocrinologist, Jay Watski, recommended you, Dr. Rockmore, and The Plastic Surgery Group.

We’re so happy you considered his recommendation! Tell us about your first consultation. Is there anything you wish you would have known prior to coming in?

Prior to my first consultation at your office, I wish I had a better understanding of the different surgeries that could be done. Doing more research prior to my first visit would have given me a better understanding of what exactly the different types of surgeries offered were.

What was the deciding factor when deciding where to undergo your procedure?

Both you and your staff were very professional and respectful. You are all very knowledgeable, and I knew immediately that I was in good hands.

Thank you! So, how did you prepare for surgery?

Preparing for surgery was easy for me. I had the support from my family and friends, and I was given a detailed list of what to do and what to prepare for, prior to surgery.

And recovery? What was that like?

Recovery, again, was very easy for me. I experienced very little pain, as I was given a comfortable amount of the right medication. Recovery was very speedy for me! In just a week, I returned to work and my day-to-day activities.

I’m so happy to hear that. Do you feel that life changed significantly since the procedure?

Since surgery, life has been great. A weight has been lifted off of my shoulders, and I have you and the staff at The Plastic Surgery Group to thank. I am very comfortable in my skin!

That is definitely the goal. What advice would you give to others considering a similar procedure?

My advice to other transgender males getting Top surgery is to keep close to your support systems. Going into surgery knowing that I was loved and supported made surgery and recovery a much better process! Stay true to yourself and have faith in your transition. If you are considering getting similar surgery, I would advise you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rockmore and see if he and his office are the right fit for you!

“Stay true to yourself and have faith in your transition” — we love that. We’re so happy to hear that you’re feeling confident in your skin. Thank you so much for taking time to talk about your experience.
