If you’re considering facelift surgery during our sunny summer season in Albany, NY, then you’ll want to spend some time thinking about your plans for the months after your procedure.
We all know that sun protection is important year-round, but after plastic surgery, it’s even more vital. That’s because exposure to the sun after any surgery, elective or not, can affect the way your body heals and the way you feel about the outcome. For my patients who plan on being outside after surgery, I recommend lots of sunscreen and sunglasses for at least the first few months after their facelift. Here’s why:
- You’ll reduce the appearance of scars. In my profession as a plastic surgeon, I understand that scars are a tradeoff. Whether you want a smoother tummy, larger breasts, or a younger-looking face, you’ll most likely end up with scars in return. It’s my job to make the results well worth the scars. However, there are ways to minimize the appearance of scars, and protection from the sun is No. 1! Scar tissue is different than normal skin in that it can become darker, redder, and more noticeable after UV exposure. These changes to the scar can be permanent and very difficult to improve once the damage has been done.
- You’ll better protect your investment. While facelift surgery can make you look years younger, spending too much time in the sun is counterproductive because sun damage actually speeds up the skin’s aging process, increasing fine lines and wrinkles, causing the skin to lose elasticity, and creating dark spots or general discoloration. Proper sun care after your procedure will keep you looking youthful for longer and preserve your refreshed appearance.
- You’ll reduce your risk for skin cancer. Even though you’ll likely look more like the younger you, don’t repeat the mistakes of your youth by skimping on sunscreen! The majority of skin cancers develop on the face, head, and neck, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. The last thing you want is to be planning a skin cancer surgery instead of enjoying your new, vibrant look in the years to come.
I understand that outdoor weddings, family reunions, and days at the lake await. If you are out in the sun in the months following your facelift, you’ll want to invest in a good sunblock, I usually recommend SkinMedica’s Total Defense + Repair SPF 50 sunscreen which we carry at Spa One, as well as a wide-brimmed hat and some sunglasses to protect yourself!
