Ready for Plastic Surgery? Our Guide to Knowing It’s the Right Time

It’s often said that if you wait for the “perfect” time to do anything — whether it’s having a baby or taking that dream vacation — you’ll be waiting forever. But as a plastic surgeon, I tell my Albany, NY patients that there’s definitely an ideal time for surgery. Read on to learn how perfect timing is all about knowing your “rights.”

  1. Am I in the right financial situation?

The cost of plastic surgery is an important consideration for nearly all of my patients, and it often adds considerable weight to the decision. Not only does the actual cost of the procedure itself need to be evaluated, the “soft” costs are important, too. These include the cost of time off from work, the cost of prescriptions, and the cost of any supplies you’ll need while you recuperate and heal. Most plastic surgery procedures aren’t covered by insurance, so choosing a financing plan or simply saving up is the best option for most patients.

  1. Do I have the right support system?

Whether you live alone or you’re a busy spouse and parent, a good support system of friends and family is crucial. I know that plastic surgery can be controversial, and it’s helpful if everyone in your immediate “sphere” — specifically your spouse or partner — is on board. In addition to needing extra help around the house while you heal, you’ll also need a good emotional support system. Knowing that the people closest to you have your back and support your decision is invaluable for a good overall experience.

  1. Do I have the right plastic surgeon?

Choosing a plastic surgeon is no small feat, and it can be overwhelming during the early stages of your planning process. Remember to look for a doctor who is board certified in plastic surgery. Bonus points if he or she specializes in the procedure you want and has the years of experience and beautiful before-and-after photos to back up his or her credentials.

  1. Do I have the right mindset?

There are plenty of reasons you might consider having plastic surgery — and they can make or break your experience. Above all, it’s so important to make sure you’re having the surgery for yourself. Your reasons are your own, and you should ensure they’re just that — yours. I don’t recommend having plastic surgery because someone else suggested you do or to get back at an ex-spouse. While those types of motivations may offer immediate gratification, the long-term satisfaction of knowing that you did something for yourself entirely on your terms is immeasurable. By going into your surgery with a positive, realistic attitude, you can get the most out of your experience and your results.

Only you can answer these questions for yourself, so it’s important to be honest when you’re considering plastic surgery. By doing it at your personal best time and for your personal best reasons, you can do your part to ensure a beautiful, safe result that brings you years of long-term satisfaction.
