What To Look for in Breast Augmentation Patient Reviews & Testimonials

When seeking a qualified plastic surgeon for your breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedure, some of your best clues can be found in reviews and patient testimonials. While before-and-after photos are also helpful to show your results, they tell you little about the patients’ experiences. What were their consultations like? Did the surgeon put them at ease? Why did they choose this particular surgeon as opposed to others in their area? A testimonial can answer all these questions and more.

What is a patient testimonial?

Plastic surgery is often an emotional process, so it’s not surprising that it can be daunting to put your thoughts down on paper in a few sentences. Let me tell you from experience, it’s even more challenging to sit in front of a camera and talk about your journey! But I’ve found that when patients are truly happy with their results, they want to tell just about anyone who will listen.

In writing or recording their testimonials, patients will typically share what led them to plastic surgery, what they thought about the physician, how their procedure went, and how they feel about their results. Because I believe selecting a plastic surgeon is the start of a mutually shared vision, I take a unique approach to the patient testimonial in that I actually sit down and participate in the process by sharing some of my own takeaways.

Where can I find testimonials?

Most reputable plastic surgeons will share their testimonials and reviews on their websites. You should spend almost as much time here as you do in the surgeon’s photo gallery. Often, surgeons will also share their testimonials on social media sites such as YouTube

What should I look for in patient testimonials?

When you watch video testimonials, you’ll want to look for a few things:

  • Confidence: This person has just realized a dream they have probably had for many years. You should be able to see the effect on the person’s overall demeanor and expression. Sometimes body language can speak volumes!
  • Honesty: Often, the most useful part of a testimonial is when a patient shares something personal. This will tell you a lot about the patient’s relationship and comfort level with the surgeon. For example, when a woman shares that she initially wanted a drastic change in breast size but that the surgeon talked her into a size more suitable for her frame, you know the surgeon can be trusted to recommend what’s best for you.
  • “Natural” and other key words: Contrary to old stereotypes, most plastic surgery patients don’t want to look like they’ve had surgery at all. If a patient is bragging about just how natural the results are, then that’s a positive clue. Try jotting down a list of your goals and look for them as key words in each testimonial.

Why are written patient reviews important?

Reviews written by patients on sites like RealSelf, Google, and RateMDs are honest evaluations of a patient’s experience. The patient often writes these reviews on their own accord, without the influence of a plastic surgery practice. Your plastic surgeon should be confident enough about their patient relationships and results to show patient reviews from third-party websites on their own plastic surgery sites, so you have an additional source of information from actual patients.
