Life After Breast Augmentation: Your Questions Answered

Life After Breast Augmentation: Your Questions Answered

Women considering breast augmentation at my Troy, NY, area practice are excited about the choice they’ve made and are looking forward to enjoying fuller breasts and new curves. For many patients, though, mixed in with this excitement is a bit of uncertainty about what their lives might be like after the procedures.

While research on the breast augmentation procedure itself is important, you might have other, private concerns about how will breast implants change your life and everyday routine. This post will answer a few common questions to help put you at ease.

What should I wear after breast augmentation to fit my new shape?

Getting a professional bra fitting when fully healed is something I recommend to all of my patients. This is an exciting part of the process, as you will be introduced to the best styles and shapes that flatter your new figure.

It’s also fun to try on clothing styles that will highlight your body’s new shape. While you won’t need to replace your entire wardrobe after getting breast implants, many women enjoy shopping for bras and tops that they had been longing to wear beforehand.

Can breast implants cause back pain?

I help my patients choose an implant size that’s proportionate to their bodies and won’t cause them discomfort. It is important to create proportional results that your body will be able to support. While some women may experience the natural discomfort that can occur after surgery, these issues usually fade as your muscles and posture adapt. In the days after your operation, it is helpful to sleep in a recliner and to avoid walking with hunched shoulders.

Will I feel self-conscious about my new body?

Most women need a bit of adjustment period as they get used to their enhanced breast size. It’s normal for patients to second-guess their decisions in the first few weeks after breast augmentation surgery before the implants settle and they see the final results. As time passes, any feelings of self-consciousness are replaced by enhanced confidence for the vast majority of our patients. Our patient Nona talks about her newfound confidence and her life after getting breast implants in this video:

A survey conducted a few years ago of women who had breast augmentation surgery found that 98% of those asked said the results met or exceeded their expectations. The results of the study were published in Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Will my workout routine need to change?

Fitness routines and activity levels play an important role in selecting an implant. Health-conscious women might want to consider a smaller implant size for maximum comfort during workouts. I’ll discuss this during your consultation to ensure you pick an option that won’t impede your lifestyle. In general, patients can expect to return to their regular workouts after a few weeks of post-surgery recovery. Slowly re-introduce upper body exercises and buy a supportive, well-fitting sports bra.
